How to switch from Snipe-IT to ItemTally
Export your assets from Snipe-IT as CSV, upload them, and fix three column matches by hand (Asset Tag, Default Location and the second value column). Asset tags stay as scannable codes, so your labels keep working. Licences and depreciation stay behind.
What you need
- An admin login to your Snipe-IT instance
- An ItemTally workspace, free for one editor and ten borrowers
- A spreadsheet app, to add one column before importing
-
Decide whether ItemTally is the right move
Snipe-IT is built for IT asset management: licences, accessories, depreciation, EULAs, LDAP. If that's your job, stay. Teams move when they mainly lend mixed physical gear, track consumables with minimums, or want people without accounts to borrow and return.
-
Export your assets from Snipe-IT
Either open Assets, show all the columns you want with the column picker, and use the table's export button to download CSV; or use Reports → Custom Asset Report, tick the fields and download the CSV. Both are documented in Snipe-IT's own code and docs.
-
Add a Type column
Open the CSV and add a column called Type with
uniquein every row. Snipe-IT assets are individual things; without it, any asset with no serial would arrive as counted stock with a quantity of zero. -
Upload and fix three column matches
Upload on the Imports screen. Then in Match columns: set Asset Tag to Barcode or code (it's guessed as Tags), set Default Location to Don't import (it would be added to the Location path), and keep only one of Purchase Cost and Current Value as Value. In the Custom Asset Report, also set Snipe-IT's own Type column (user, asset or location) to Don't import.
-
Keep the useful extras as custom fields
Model, Manufacturer, Purchase Date, Warranty Expires and Supplier aren't ItemTally fields. Pick Custom field for the ones you'll want on each item.
-
Check and import
The Check step lists every asset that will be created and any row that would be skipped, with the reason. Fix and re-upload until it's clean.
-
Hand checked-out assets back out
Snipe-IT's Checked Out To column tells you who has what, but ItemTally doesn't import custody. Keep it as a custom field for reference, then scan each asset and hand it to the person, or put several in a basket and hand them over at once.

Start freeQuestions people ask
Will my Snipe-IT asset tag labels still scan?
Yes, once Asset Tag is mapped to Barcode or code. The tag is attached to the item, so scanning the existing barcode or typing the tag opens the right item.
Is checkout history imported?
No. Snipe-IT's exports contain the current holder and the latest checkout and expected check-in dates, not the full history. Keep your Snipe-IT export as the record of the past.
What about licences, accessories and components?
Those don't have an equivalent in ItemTally. Accessories and components can be imported as counted stock with minimums; licences have no home here.
Is ItemTally self-hosted like Snipe-IT?
No. ItemTally is hosted in the EU and isn't available to self-host. You can export everything as CSV at any time.
