How to use ChatGPT or Claude with your inventory

Add ItemTally as a connector in Claude or ChatGPT, sign in, and ask in plain language. Free on every plan. Changes appear as cards and happen only when you press Confirm.

What you need

  • An ItemTally workspace (any plan)
  • Claude, ChatGPT or another assistant that supports remote MCP connectors
  1. Add ItemTally as a connector

In Claude, open Settings → Connectors, choose Add custom connector and paste https://api.itemtally.com/mcp. In ChatGPT or another assistant, look for custom connectors or MCP servers and add the same address.

  2. Sign in and choose the access

Sign in to ItemTally, pick the workspace, and choose Read or Read and propose changes. Owners and admins can allow changes; everyone else connects read-only. The assistant acts as you, with your folder limits.

  3. Ask questions in plain language

Try "What's below its minimum in the store room?", "Who has the projectors?", "What's free next Tuesday?" or "How many days of gloves do we have left?". The assistant answers from your live register; in Claude, lists and items appear as cards.

  4. Let it prepare changes, if you want

Ask it to hand something over, return it, adjust stock, add items or import a spreadsheet. It prepares the change and shows it as a card. Nothing happens until you press Confirm, and the receipt has an Undo.

Good questions to start with

  • “What should I reorder this week, and how many of each?”
  • “Which items haven’t moved in six months?”
  • “List everything Jonas has, with due dates.”
  • “Is there a projector free from Friday to Monday?”
  • “Which van is short of fixings?”

What it won’t do

The assistant reads and prepares. It doesn’t decide: nothing changes until you confirm, and it can’t change anything you couldn’t change yourself in the app. If an answer looks wrong, the logbook shows exactly how each number came about.

Try it on your own stuff. Free for one editor and ten borrowers, with unlimited items. No card.

Questions people ask

What can the assistant see?

What you can see, in the one workspace you connected: items, stock levels, who has what, what's free, days of stock left, the logbook and reports. Disconnect it in Settings → API and MCP and access stops at once.

Can it change my inventory without asking?

No. It can only prepare a change. In Claude, the Confirm button on the card is the only way to apply it, and the assistant can't press it. Each change lands in the logbook under your name, marked "via Claude".

Do I need to pay for this?

No. Connecting an assistant is free on every plan, including the free one, like the API.

Can I connect with an API key instead?

Yes, for scripts and clients that can't sign in, such as Claude Code on a server: create a key in Settings → API and MCP and send it as a bearer token. See the developer guide.

Is there an assistant inside ItemTally?

Yes. Press ⌘K (Ctrl+K on Windows) and choose Ask the register… to ask the same kind of question in the app. It can prepare changes too, and acts only when you confirm.
