Sortly earned its place: photo-first folders, a polished mobile app, years of refinement. The complaints that push people out are consistent and public: item caps per tier (your register grows, your bill grows), offline mode gated to higher tiers, API access Enterprise-only - and the 2024 legacy-plan migration, where some customers saw 2-10× increases on roughly two weeks' notice. The spreadsheet. Free, familiar, and honestly fine under ~100 items with one person updating it. It can't scan, can't work a basement with no signal, and can't tell you who has the drill. When those start to hurt, the afternoon move is shorter than you think.
How to choose in five minutes
Count two things: how many items you'll have in two years, and how many people need to write. If items will grow and budgets won't, avoid anything that meters items - that's the whole lesson of the Sortly exodus.
